Read previewThe young crowd at a Nashville nightclub was ready to dance under the strobe lights to a throbbing mix of hip-hop, rap and Latin beats. The last unspoken rule seemed obvious by then: No secular music — the playlist would be all Christian. Word quickly spread around that a couple had traveled 9,000-plus miles from their home in Brisbane, Australia, to the Christian club in the Tennessee capital known as Music City. Whispering, someone in a small group asked God "to keep away negative suicidal thoughts." "It sounds oxymoronic — a Christian dance club," said Nicholas Oldham, who manages the club's business.

Along with my husband and two friends, I participated in the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, which calls on hikers to complete the 24-mile hike in under 12 hours. The experience was an endurance challenge, offering spectacular views, beautiful hill walking, and an incredible sense of achievement. Although we could've done a self-guided hike, we booked an organized walk so we wouldn't have to worry about navigation. A line of trucks and campers, cars and vans — from South Dakota and North Carolina, Washington and Pennsylvania — snaked over farm roads on Saturday before gathering on the winter-brown grass of a ranch, steps from the Rio Grande, in the rural community of Quemado, Texas. The gathering marked the final stop of a days-long journey: a convoy of conservative Americans who drove to the border to demonstrate their frustration, fear and anger over what they saw as a broken immigration system. The location in Quemado had been chosen for its proximity to the city of Eagle Pass, a flashpoint in the pitched confrontation over border security and immigration between the Biden administration and Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas. Other convoys this week reached the border in Yuma, Ariz., and San Ysidro, Calif., all with the goal of spurring tighter controls on migrants crossing the border.

Nikki Haley Battles Long Odds in New Hampshire

Long lines snaked into and around polling locations today in New Hampshire, where the first presidential primaries of 2024 will set the tone for the rest of the year. In the Republican contest, Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, barnstormed polling locations in a last-ditch effort to upset Donald Trump. New Hampshire, which has been known to throw curveballs into the race, has long been seen as her best, and perhaps last, shot at competing with Trump. My colleague Jazmine Ulloa, who has been covering Haley’s campaign, told me that Haley has continued to project confidence and cast herself as a fighter, despite trailing in the polls. But Haley’s campaign vowed in a memo to stay in the race no matter what happens.

The small Swiss Alpine town is again playing host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), where the world's top brass in finance and politics convene each year to try to solve the biggest problems that plague our planet. But the long and winding road to Davos offers another lesser-known benefit, which makes the lengthier commute well worth the while. Here's what was overheard on the connecting trains from Zurich Airport to Davos Platz. OpenAI's media representative declined CNBC's request to interview Altman in Davos, citing a "tight" schedule. One Davos attendee noted their company was in the IP space and had just raised this summer, because "the rights issue is so complicated."

Chain pays tribute to these restaurants with new interpretations of their most iconic dishes, which are created by Michelin-starred chef Tim Hollingsworth. "We all came up on different chain restaurants and, from a very authentic place, we all got excited about them." How did a comedian, film producer, and Michelin-starred chef help predict the resurgence of chain restaurants? "It's become so hard to capture the attention and interest of a massive amount of people, but chain restaurants have been around for 50 or 60 years.

In Britain, Armistice Day is usually an understated affair, marked only by two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. The other, comprising a few hundred people from Britain’s far right and football hooligan networks, gathered several miles away in Westminster. Her departure was quickly overshadowed by the shock return to frontline politics of the former prime minister David Cameron, the architect of austerity and Brexit. For all her extremist posturing, Ms. Braverman is part of an establishment consensus that firmly backs Israel’s war in Gaza. In Britain, as its politicians and public move away from each other, reality is cleaving in two.

PHILADELPHIA—The Arizona Diamondbacks are young and inexperienced. They won just 84 games during the regular season and barely made it to the playoffs. They are one of the few championship-contending teams that can sincerely spout the maxim, “No one believed in us.”Yet the Diamondbacks are heading for the World Series on the back of a playoff run that goes beyond disbelief. They have toppled big names—the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and now the Philadelphia Phillies—with a team of players that few have heard of, outside of Arizona.

The lure of the Eternal City and the magic of the Ryder Cup means there will be plenty of stars and stripes mixed in with the yellow and blue of Europe over the next three days, with hundreds having made the trip across the pond. "You are the heartbeat of this event, you are our 13th man, let's make this the loudest Ryder Cup ever," Donald, who began his speech in Italian, said as he signed off. That was where, as golden hour set in, a magic Valentino show began — with Kaia Gerber in a pair of jeans and a white shirt. Granted, they weren’t just any jeans: they were made from silk gazar entirely embroidered in micro beads dyed 80 different shades of indigo to resemble denim, but still. They looked like jeans. Jeans — or their very fancy doppelgängers — have been the biggest trend of the week. There were more jeans, likewise made from trompe l’oeil beading, in the Jean Paul Gaultier collection guest designed by Julien Dossena, and lots of jeans in all stages of distress at Balenciaga, which also were not denim at all but oil-painted canvas that took two and a half months to create.

More than a year ago, a mass shooting on the subway in Brooklyn miraculously killed no one. But as the victims live on, so do their physical and psychological wounds. The violence was just one of 648 mass shootings across the United States in 2022, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group. There were seven mass shootings on April 15 alone, the highest of any day so far this year. The largest was at a teenager’s birthday party in Alabama, where four were killed and 28 others shot.

Like most other gated suburbs in medium-density Chinese cities, ours was a cluster of nondescript buildings, countless lives piled to the skies. If Vermeer conjured a corner of my childhood bedroom on canvas and asked me to finish the rest, I’d have a hard time. Only floor plans have given my memories of movement a tangible form, a shape for the routine motions that made up my days. I walked through the front door and into the living room. A floor plan is the only way I’ll retain anything of that route to the window.

French pension protest blocks entry to Louvre museum

[1/4] French police look on as protesters holding French CGT labour union flags in front of the glass Pyramid block the entrance of the Louvre museum to protest against the French government's pension reform, in Paris, France, March 27, 2023. REUTERS/Marco TrujilloPARIS, March 27 (Reuters) - Trade union protesters angered by President Emmanuel Macron's move to raise the French retirement age without a final vote in parliament blocked the Louvre museum in Paris on Monday, frustrating crowds of visitors. Demonstrating peacefully against plans to make most French work an extra two years to 64 to balance the pension budget, a small number of protesters gathered at the foot of the Louvre's glass pyramid. The protest came one day ahead of a 10th round of nationwide strikes and street marches and followed violence in cities across France over the pension system changes. Separately, Paris police said they were carrying out an operation to prevent unauthorised gatherings in front of the Centre Pomopidou, another landmark museum in Paris.
We were walking a stretch of England’s South West Coast Path when my wife and I stopped to marvel at the cliffs plummeting to the Atlantic, and the ancient stone wall that snaked alongside us. In a couple of hours we would come to a village, stop for soup and pints of beer, and keep on walking. There wasn’t anything in the world we’d rather be doing, we agreed right there, than walking that path that skirted the sea. Nothing gives simple joy and satisfaction like walking. A long stroll over days or weeks can reveal a world and a self you didn’t know existed.
